Start at Kazan Cathedral

Nevsky Prospekt and Gostiny Dvor are metro options for this part of the centre. The Russian Museum lists both for Mikhailovsky Palace. The approach to the first stop at Kazan Cathedral is separate

From the colonnade, continue along Griboyedov Canal to the Church of the Saviour on Spilled Blood. The opposite bank provides an overall view without standing against the fence

Return to Nevsky through Arts Square

Continue from the church towards Mikhailovsky Palace at 4 Inzhenernaya Street. Return towards Nevsky Prospekt through the Arts Square area

At Eliseyev Emporium, look for the large arched window and facade sculptures. Continue along Nevsky to Anichkov Bridge over the Fontanka. Use pavements and designated crossings to view the horse groups

Indoor visit or exterior walk

Russian Museum exhibitions and the interior of the Church on Spilled Blood need separate tickets and time. Check the chosen venue’s hours before departure; an exterior walk does not guarantee an open entrance

For a shorter version, finish at Mikhailovsky Palace. After the full route, plan the onward walk from Anichkov Bridge to the metro separately

Before the walk

  • Allow for wind on the embankments
  • Use designated crossings over Nevsky Prospekt
  • The walk alternates between a canal embankment, museum square and busy Nevsky Prospekt. View the outline of the Church on Spilled Blood from across the water, then look at the Art Nouveau façade of the Eliseyev Emporium. The finish at Anichkov Bridge stays in the mainland centre and does not require crossing a Neva drawbridge

Check hours, tickets and access with each venue. Barriers may change the track and queues may add time. Accessibility has not been surveyed on site

Questions before the walk

Does the route depend on drawbridge openings?

No. The track stays in the central area without crossing the Neva. Check any later journey to another district separately

Does this route include the Hermitage?

No. The museum stop is the Russian Museum’s Mikhailovsky Palace. The Hermitage needs a separate route and time allowance
