Bring the three façades together
At the Ulugbek Madrasah, start with an overall view and locate it in relation to its two neighbours. From the square, notice how the portals face one another and how open space makes the composition readable. Before approaching the decoration, choose a viewpoint showing those relationships. Use it to compare details later
Tilla-Kori and Sher-Dor have contrasting portal edges, tile patterns and larger forms. Courtyards and interiors are separate visits. Tickets, events and current restrictions need checking first
Continue beyond the ceremonial square
Chorsu is smaller than the Registan ensemble. The continuation to the Maturidi mausoleum follows residential lanes, with bends and boundaries between public and domestic spaces. The historic city continues beyond its main square
Continuing beyond Registan depends on remaining time and energy. The lanes can be a separate outing. Paving and kerbs need care. Closed courtyards and residential privacy must be respected. The mausoleum approach follows the permitted public route, without shortcuts through homes

Before the walk
- Look at Registan as a whole before choosing individual façade details
- Interior visits require an admission check before adding them to the plan
- In residential lanes, photograph the street without looking into private yards
- Access to Registan and the madrasah courtyards depends on tickets, events and visiting hours
- Old neighbourhoods may have narrow passages and kerbs; respect residents’ privacy
Check hours, tickets and access with each venue. Barriers may change the track and queues may add time. Accessibility has not been surveyed on site
Questions before the walk
Does Registan count as four separate attractions?
The square and its three madrasahs have separate markers for orientation. They form one ensemble with several points of attention, not four distant complexes
Is Shah-i-Zinda part of this walk?
No. Bibi-Khanym, Siyob Bazaar and Shah-i-Zinda have a separate route. Plan that stage with additional attention to stairs and visits to sacred sites
