At the Double Gates, stand beside the arches rather than in the passage, which is shared by pedestrians and vehicles. Once inside, compare street widths with the space beyond the walls. Orient yourself before following the first attractive side alley.
The caravanserai draws attention to the city’s trading life. Observe its façade and entrance from the public street. A visible courtyard does not establish unrestricted access, so keep entry optional; the sequence still works as an exterior walk.
Connect landmarks with ordinary streets
First view Maiden Tower in relation to its surroundings, then examine its form more closely. Its original purpose is not conclusively established, so treat stories about it as interpretations or legends. Direct observation is more useful here than choosing one dramatic explanation.
Approaching the Shirvanshahs’ Palace, notice how small streets connect homes, religious buildings and major monuments. Icherisheher remains a residential environment. Respect the arrangements at Muhammad Mosque and avoid obstructing ordinary doorways while their residents are trying to enter or leave.
Choose a museum priority
The palace complex and Museum of Miniature Books offer quite different scales of experience. Give your preferred interior a separate time allowance. Entering every museum is unnecessary for a satisfying walk, and completing the outdoor sequence does not depend on all buildings being accessible.
Stone paving, gradients and steps require secure footwear and attention to the route. At junctions, check the next stop before following an appealing view: small diversions accumulate. Tower climbing, galleries and a return to the gates should not be folded automatically into the walking estimate.
