Start at the Hippodrome by looking across the space before concentrating on individual monuments. Walk a little, turn around and notice how the surrounding buildings frame it. Select one detail to investigate more closely after this first overview; trying to read every inscription immediately can make the wider setting difficult to grasp.
Between the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia, compare the silhouettes and the arrangement of domes from several positions. The blue decoration that gives the mosque its familiar name belongs primarily to its interior. Looking from outside still makes an interesting architectural stop, while leaving a clear reason to return for a separate visit.
Give one interior priority
Decide whether your main visit will be the mosque, Hagia Sophia or the Basilica Cistern. Keep the other stops as exterior visits when your schedule is tight. This prevents the first queue from deciding your whole day. Reaching the cistern on the map is distinct from entering its underground spaces, which requires checking admission.
