Understanding the cathedral ensemble
The cathedral, freestanding bell tower and Triumphal Arch are separate structures within one composition. Walk along the axis from the gardens towards the arch, then look back. Close to the cathedral, attention shifts to porticoes and dome; at the arch, to the relationship between square and boulevard
Park and government buildings
The Stephen the Great monument marks the transition to the central park. After its shaded avenues, the opera theatre, presidential palace and parliament introduce another scale of façades. Transfiguration Church finishes the sequence with a return to religious architecture
Stops in route order
Nativity Cathedral — Cathedral with a central dome and columned porticoes in the city gardens. Distinguish the freestanding bell tower from the main cathedral
Triumphal Arch — Stone arch with a clock on the cathedral-and-square axis. View the ensemble's axis from the cathedral gardens
Stephen the Great Monument — Monument to the ruler beside the central park entrance. Keep access to the pedestal clear
Stephen the Great Central Park — Historic central park with avenues and monuments. Take a shaded break before continuing through the city blocks
Maria Bieșu National Opera and Ballet Theatre — Theatre building with a broad main façade on the principal boulevard. Plan any performance or foyer visit separately
Presidential Palace — Government building with a pronounced vertical façade rhythm. View it only from the public pavement
Parliament of Moldova — Government complex with a symmetrical façade on the boulevard. Respect access restrictions around the guarded building
Transfiguration Church — Domed church beside the main city boulevard. View it from the street and check current entry arrangements
Access and planning
View government buildings from public pavements without expecting courtyard entry. Cross the boulevard at designated crossings. Services and city events may affect access to parts of the ensemble
