Bukhara / First walk

Bukhara from the trading domes to Chor Minor

This route introduces old Bukhara at an everyday scale. Trading passages give way to an old mosque, a square around water and residential lanes. Notice those changes as you walk, and keep some attention for Chor Minor at the end rather than treating it as a final box to tick.

Follow the domes towards the water

Begin at Toqi Telpak Furushon and observe how the covered passage works: where its branches lead, where people pause and how light changes beneath the dome. Separate shopping from following the route. Otherwise the first stalls can absorb all your spare time and leave the remaining stops feeling unnecessarily rushed.

At Magoki Attori, make an architectural pause and compare the mosque’s scale with the surrounding passages. Toqi Sarrofon then returns your attention to movement through a domed space. Following this repeated idea is a useful way to remember the area without memorising every name. Step aside whenever you stop to look or take a photograph.

Keep time for the final lanes

Make Lyabi-Hauz your main rest point. First look at the pond and the arrangement of buildings around it, then approach the Nadir Divan Begi façade. Use the accessible waterside path rather than treating the middle of the pond as a walking destination. Before settling at a table, decide how much time you want to keep for the finish.

The route continues through residential streets to Chor Minor. Respect that change of setting: keep to public passages and avoid pointing cameras into homes. At the four towers, find an overall view before comparing their decoration. Shade is limited between stops, while paving and kerbs still deserve attention when you begin to tire.

Before you go

  • Keep water and energy for the walk after Lyabi-Hauz.
  • Give shopping its own pause so it does not consume the route.
  • Plan an exterior view of Chor Minor; access upstairs is not confirmed.

Terrain and access

Paving, narrow residential lanes and kerbs; limited shade between stops.

  • Calculated using the OpenStreetMap pedestrian network; not verified by an on-site walk. Closures and barriers may change the path.
  • Visit time is an editorial estimate. Check museum and religious-site admission, tickets and access separately.

Times are estimates, not opening hours. Ticketed visits and queues can extend the walk. Accessibility has not been surveyed on site.

Questions before the walk

Can I finish at Lyabi-Hauz?

Yes. That makes a shorter walk through the trading area. Save Chor Minor as a separate destination instead of rushing through its approach.

Does this walk include Poi-Kalyan?

No. It has a separate route. Combining them requires additional time for the connection, breaks and careful viewing of both ensembles.
