Copacabana to Ipanema on foot: an urban route via Arpoador

Rio’s beach route can be walked along urban promenades without stepping onto the sand. Copacabana Palace, the fort and Arpoador provide architectural and spatial landmarks, while Ipanema finishes the transition to another curve of coast

From the hotel façade to the fort

At Copacabana Palace, the city frontage and beach face each other. Farther along, notice the promenade’s rhythm: paving patterns, cross streets and changing views along the water. The fort occupies separate grounds, so entering it should not be a condition of continuing towards Arpoador

Moving between two beaches

Arpoador changes both direction and view. Stable open paths are enough for the walk; wet rocks are unnecessary for a photograph. Beyond the headland, Ipanema becomes a different urban scene, with another arrangement of mountains and blocks rather than simply more of the same beach

Stops in route order

Copacabana Palace — Historic hotel façade facing the beach promenade. View the building from the public pavement

Fort Copacabana — Coastal fort on the headland at the beach's southern end. Check tickets and access to the grounds separately

Arpoador — Rocky headland between beaches overlooking the urban coast. Stay on stable paths and away from wet rock edges

Ipanema Beach — Urban beach with a long promenade and views towards Dois Irmãos. The route uses the promenade; sand and swimming are optional

Access and planning

The exposed coast calls for sun protection and drinking water. Swimming, equipment hire and fort admission are separate from the route. Evening photography should not create an obligation to continue walking after dark

Finish at Arpoador for a shorter version; explore the historic centre on a separate walk
