From the financial district to the square

The pyramid and Columbus Tower’s green roof provide the first landmarks. City Lights shifts attention from height to street scale. Washington Square gives an unobstructed view of Saints Peter and Paul Church and a useful break before the climb

The tower as a finish

Telegraph Hill changes the walk: a short map segment can take more effort than a longer waterfront stretch. Coit Tower is worth seeing in its hilltop setting, separately from any paid interior ascent. Finishing at the square is a reasonable option when energy is running low

Stops in route order

Transamerica Pyramid — Four-sided pyramidal tower with a pale ribbed exterior. View the silhouette from the pavement; the office tower is not an observatory

Columbus Tower — Corner building with a green copper roof beside Columbus Avenue. Look for a view from the intersection without stepping into traffic

City Lights Bookstore — Independent bookshop associated with Beat culture. Treat browsing inside as a separate visit from the street stop

Washington Square — Lawn square facing a church in North Beach. Use the square for a break before climbing the hill

Saints Peter and Paul Church — Church with twin tall spires above Washington Square. View the façade across the square's open space

Coit Tower — Pale cylindrical tower on the summit of Telegraph Hill. Separate the climb to the base from an observatory visit

Access and planning

Do not assume step-free access: steep streets and stairs require checking the approach. The bookshop and church have their own arrangements. Allow separate time for the tower’s interior murals and observation deck

Finish at Washington Square for a shorter walk, or continue with the harbour waterfront route
